GoldFish intro 3 - Oranda and Ryukin

Oranda (Carassius auratus)

  • Originated result of aquarium strain

  • Size is around 15cm (6 in)

  • Recommended tank size to be bigger than 60cm (24 in)

  • Ease of keeping : Moderate

Orandas are popular because of the hood-like growth on the head, which develops with maturity. They are available in many colour forms, including red, blue, chocolate, black, calico, red and white. Fish start to develop the distinctive thickening of the skin around the head, called a hood, when they are about 5 cm (2 in) long.

Ryukin (Carassius auratus)

  • Originated as a result of aquarium strain

  • Size usually around 15cm (6 in)

  • Recommended tank size should be no smaller than 60cm (24 in )in length.

  • Ease of keeping : Moderate

Ryukins are also commonly called Fantails, and they may be distinguished from Orandas by their different head shape and the fact that they do not develop hoods. Mature, show-grade specimens become incredibly deep bodied, and a fish 15 cm (6 in) long may be 13 cm (5 in) deep. Ryukins are available in calico, red, white and other colour forms.

GoldFish intro 2 - Comet and Black Telescope Eye

Comet (Carassius Auratus)

  • Originated as a result of Aquarium strain
  • Size is usually smaller than 30 cm (12 in)
  • Tank size: no less than 90 cm (36 in)
  • Ease of keeping : Easy
A Comet is a longer finned variety of Goldfish with a more slender shape and a pointed tail. Coloration is the same as the Common Goldfish apart from a form called Sarasa Comet (picture above), which has rich red and bright white coloration. Many fish sold as Goldfish are actually Comets.

Black Telescope Eye (Carassius Auratus)
  • Originated as a result of Aquarium strain
  • Size is around 15 cm (6 in)
  • Tank size : 60cm (24 in)
  • Ease of keeping : Moderate
The fish was given its common name because of its protruding eyes and black coloration, and it is a popular variety. Older fish will start to turn bronze from the belly up, and old specimens can be susceptible to cataracts. Also available are Red Telescopes and Calico Telescopes.
