Orandas are popular because of the hood-like growth on the head, which develops with maturity. They are available in many colour forms, including red, blue, chocolate, black, calico,red and white. Fish start to develop the distinctive thickening of the skin around the head, called a hood, when they are about 5 cm (2 in) long.

Ryukin (Carassius auratus)

- Size usually around 15cm (6 in)
- Recommended tank size should be no smaller than 60cm (24 in )in length.
- Ease of keeping : Moderate
Ryukins are also commonly called Fantails, and they may be distinguished from Orandas by their different head shape and the fact that they do not develop hoods. Mature, show-grade specimens become incredibly deep bodied, and a fish 15 cm (6 in) long may be 13 cm (5 in) deep. Ryukins are available in calico, red, white and other colour forms.
